IPP group disputes government claim B.C. Hydro wasting $16 billion
The province’s allegation that the previous government pressured B.C. Hydro into buying $16 billion worth of electricity it doesn’t need from independent power producers is a misrepresentation of the utility’s own data, according to the industry group that speaks for IPPs.
The association’s position is that B.C. Hydro wasn’t pressured into any contracts or signed deals that reflected fair prices at the time to secure supply. Clean Energy B.C.’s analysis of B.C. Hydro’s data, however, concludes that B.C. Hydro’s own data doesn’t support Zapped’s allegation of $16 billion of overspending on electricity.
Haslam added that the previous government’s policies gave B.C. Hydro no option but to increase private-power purchases and it advanced them “despite advice against it from and the ministry.”
