The military presence in Western Australia’s flood-ravaged Kimberley region will double by Tuesday after the prime minister spent the morning at Fitzroy Crossing, which bore the brunt of what has been described as the worst flood in the state’s history

The military presence on the ground in Western Australia’s flood-ravaged Kimberley region will double by Tuesday, as the prime minister marvels at the trail of destruction left by ex-tropical cyclone Ellie.

The record-high 15.8 metre floodwaters in the Fitzroy River catchment are subsiding and heading downstream south of Derby, with the river at Willare now peaking at 10.6 metres. With the water receding and the true scale of the damage being unveiled, Albanese expressed his shock at the sheer power of the disaster during a press conference in Broome on Monday afternoon.

“There are major challenges being faced, but this community is incredibly resilient and there was that real sense of community and belonging.“This has been a traumatic experience for people and people are doing it tough and we will have to do everything we can to make sure there is mental health support on the ground.

WA Premier Mark McGowan said the state government would put every resource possible into fixing the town’s infrastructure, but warned the recovery process would be a long one.“We can’t put a timeframe on that just yet, but it will affect travel throughout the Kimberley for some time.” Shire of Derby president Geoff Haerewa told Radio 6PR his primary concern was where that water was headed, with reports it was now surging towards the town’s main airport.“We also have the Curtin RAAF base, which would take some substantial aircraft.
