North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP are investigating the vandalism, which took place about 11 p.m. Monday
North Cowichan Mayor Rob Douglas is speaking out after the pride flag outside the Cowichan Aquatic Centre was vandalized Monday night. The pride flag, which was next to the Canadian and B.C. flags, is flown on May 17 to recognize the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, and also for all of June to mark Pride Month. It remains in place throughout May if there are no other guest flags scheduled.“There is no place in this world for hatred,” Douglas said.
Cowichan Pride Society president Teresa Stebbing said people must come together in the face of hate “in celebration of diversity, equity, and inclusion of 2SLGBTQ+ and other marginalized members of our community.” “Hate crimes like this are a stark reminder that many queer and transgendered folks are still worried about their safety.”
