Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil has slammed the previous government’s cyber security laws as “completely useless” after they found themselves unable to react effectively to the Optus and Medibank data breaches.

Her comments come as the Prime Minister convened a cyber security roundtable on Monday to discuss a series of radical interventions to prevent and deal with future hacks.

“The last prime minister was the one who got rid of the cyber-security minister and let the country go on continental drift,” Ms O’Neil said.
