Changes could be coming to Victoria’s taxi system to crack down on drivers charging exorbitant amounts for small distances, particularly from popular events in Melbourne.

Rules were changed in 2018 which let taxi drivers request fares with no maximum limits or allowed them to reject customers that do not pay upfront.

That deregulation led to huge prices being charged for small distances, particularly from major events in Melbourne such as the Australian Open or the Formula 1.But now the Department of Transport has begun consultations about certain changes, that would set maximum fare limits on unbooked journeys or from cab ranks.

“Through industry and community feedback, the Department of Transport and Planning is aware that the Regulations in their current form and in relation to taxi fares may be causing unnecessary issues and are not meeting community expectations,” it said. The changes would also ensure taxi drivers keep their meters on at all times, to rule out flat fares being used.

A government spokesperson told the Herald Sun the changes would also seek to address how taxi fares operate on weekends, other events, and on late nights.Whether you're a driver, or often catch rideshare services - like a taxi or uber - visit:
