“The squatter settlements have devolved into death traps waiting to take life,” - Sabah West Coast Wise Consumers Association, President David Chan.
Squatter settlements, according to its President David Chan, have long been a problem in cases involving water theft, illegal wiring connections, drugs, health, and hygiene. He also agreed with SESB’s appointment of an independent power distributor company to pilot the prepaid power metre concept in Kg Forest’s squatter settlement in Sandakan.
“The squatter settlements have devolved into death traps waiting to take life,” he said. He said the authorities had done all possible to prevent water and power theft, including concealing wires underground. He said that SESB loses an estimated RM20 million each year due to electricity theft. He also hoped that the Federal Government would collaborate with the State Government to address the issue of power theft in squatter settlements.
