Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is banking on two new mega-pumped hydro projects to replace the exit of coal power, but locals are angry about their impact.
Residents of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, near Gympie, say the Palaszczuk Labor government will have a fight on its hands over theWith the Queensland government committed to 22 gigawatts of new renewable projects coming into the grid by 2035 –– planners and bureaucrats are fast-tracking the rollout of big projects, including $17 billion for two mega pumped hydro projects across the state.
She organised a petition of more than 2500 people to state parliament against the proposed corridors. There are also 1000 members on her “Say No To The Lines” Facebook group. “More and more people are waking up to this. The government has tried to sneak this under the radar, but they are still forging ahead,” she said.“They should be pushing their decision on a corridor back by at least six months for further and proper consultation, but that’s not going to happen because Palaszczuk wants her green energy for the Olympics.”
“There is a lot of community anger. This corridor should go on state land rather than through freehold land. It’s just going to devalue properties and make businesses broke.” It is expected to announce its preferred north/south corridors in late March, with a final corridor to be released mid-year.A Powerlink spokeswoman said they were investigating opportunities to further use state-owned land “wherever practical”.The state government’s second pumped hydro project, the, near Mackay, is also controversial, requiring the resumption of 50 homes.
