Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that nearly nine million people remain without electricity as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Moscow's proposals for settlement need to be fulfilled to put an end to the war.

In his nightly video address, he says the situation at the front in the Donbas region is "difficult and painful"

Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, says that, when it comes to ending the war, the ball is in Ukraine's court As power shortages persist, Mr Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address that power workers repairing the grid after repeated Russian attacks had reconnected many people over Christmas, but that problems remained."The situation, as of this evening in different regions of Ukraine, is that nearly nine million people are without electricity. But the numbers and the length of the blackouts are gradually decreasing.

"First of all, matters at the front. Bakhmut, Kreminna and other areas in Donbas, which require a maximum of strength and concentration," Mr Zelenskyy said in a video address. "The situation there is difficult and painful. The occupiers are deploying all resources available to them — and these are considerable resources — to make some sort of advance."Moscow's proposals for settlement in Ukraine are well known to Kyiv and either Ukraine fulfils them for their own good or the Russian army will decide the issue, TASS agency quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying.
