A spokeswoman for the Department of Natural Resources would not provide a copy of the agreement to SaltWire on Wednesday, saying it would first have to be redacted. The department did, however, announce that taxpayers will increase the amount they pay Port Hawkesbury Paper to “provide services that support sustainable forest management on Crown and private” from $3.8 million annually to $5 million.
Under the previous agreement, the province was obligated to allow the mill to cut up to 400,000 green metric tonnes of wood annually. Under the new agreement, that amount shrinks to 275,000 green metric tonnes the mill has to be provided access to annually.
