A popular West Australian swimming spot has been closed after tests indicated the presence of a potentially deadly brain-eating amoeba. The Shire of Waroona has asked swimmers to avoid Drakesbrook Weir “until further notice” after fortnightly sampling “again indicated the presence of Naegleria amoeba in the water”.
The shire has posted temporary health warning signs around the area and has asked the public not to swim “for your safety”. The results of additional testing will be shared “as soon as they are available” and are expected to take up to seven days. Drakesbrook Weir - which is an untreated natural water body - was also closed in January over fears of a similar contamination, however, pathology testing later showed “no evidence” of naegleria fowleri at the swimming spot.
