Pope Francis’ condolence telegram lauded the Australian for his religious conviction and his work on Vatican finances. It also referenced the child abuse saga.
| Pope Francis has used an obituary message to single out Cardinal George Pell’s resilience in the face of child sexual abuse charges and his subsequent spell in prison.
The Pope is expected to preside over the requiem mass at St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, likely to take place on Friday or early next week. The cardinal is expected to lie in state before the service. Australia’s most senior Catholic figure, Pell was appointed as a cardinal in 2003, while serving as Archbishop of Sydney., he participated in the 2005 papal conclave that elected the conservative Pope Benedict XVI, who died on December 31 last year.
But the latter stages of his prefecture were marred by accusations of, and investigations into, the sexual abuse of two choirboys in 1996, during his time as Archbishop of Melbourne.
