B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating after a seemingly intoxicated Kamloops man was arrested, put in jail overnight and found dead in the morning.
According to the Independent Investigations Office of B.C., police in Kamloops were called Tuesday around 9:30 p.m. to deal with a man attempting to visit a business in the 100-block of Victoria Street. The man had previously been told not to visit the business. Police who responded to the call found the man in a nearby parking lot where he “appeared intoxicated,” according to the news release. Officers then arrested him under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act and took him back to the Kamloops RCMP station to be held overnight until he had sobered up.
Just before 6 a.m. Wednesday, the man was found unresponsive in his cell. He has since been declared dead.No further information will be released at this time.
