B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating after a driver turned his vehicle around as he approached police cars attending to another collision in Comox, then crashed.
The RCMP told investigators at the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. that around 1 a.m. Monday, officers at a crash just off Bates Road near Seal Bay Provincial Park noticed a BMW slow down and turn around after seeing police cars blocking the road ahead. One officer followed the BMW in a police vehicle. The driver of the BMW crashed the car a short distance away. He was seriously injured.
The IIO will investigate the actions of officers after the BMW driver left the area and whether there is a connection between the collision and police actions. The civilian oversight agency investigates all incidents involving officers that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there are allegations of wrongdoing.
