That’s the message Calgary police are renewing for July, ahead of a busy month of summer events and festivities — including the Calgary Stampede — and with rates of impaired-driving charges spiking in recent years.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

“From 2021 to 2023, we’ve seen an increase of double the impaired-driving charges here in the City of Calgary, from approximately 500 to over 1,000 this current year,” said Staff Sgt. Rob Patterson with the Calgary Police Service traffic unit. He said thousands of people are negatively affected by impaired driving each year in Canada, from victims to their family members.

“Head down to the Stampede grounds, have a few drinks, celebrate with your friends. But make sure that before you leave, you know how you’re getting home. Don’t assume that you’re going to be able to limit to two drinks and you’ll be fine to drive home.” One reason charges are increasing is because Alberta’s Bill 21, passed in 2020, makes it “easier than ever” for officers to process impaired drivers, Patterson said.
