NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said police were 'not hiding anything' by choosing to omit any mention of the word 'taser' when first disclosing to media that police had injured a 95-year-old woman in an aged-care home. 9News
Officers were called to Yallambee Lodge in Cooma after staff found Clare Nowland armed with a knife.
The original media release police sent to news outlets last Wednesday stated an elderly woman had "sustained injuries during an interaction" and that a critical incident team was investigating "the circumstances surrounding the incident"., Webb strongly denied police had wanted to obscure the nature of what had happened.
"We were not hiding anything then," Webb said, saying police needed time to speak with family about the "unusual" incident so as not to learn about it through media. An investigation has been launched, involving body cam and interviews with the senior constable who tasered Nowland and his partner, which would shed light on how the situation escalated after they responded to reports of a woman holding a knife.
Webb shrugged off criticism for not personally watching the recorded body cam video of the Tasering incident yet."It may be the case ... where I have to make a determination based on a brief of evidence without being tainted by having seen a part of the brief without context."Webb confirmed that she had been shown the first media release before it was sent out to news organisations, and she "absolutely" stood by its wording.
Webb said they wanted to let all the family know what had happened, before telling media the details of how she had been injured after being Tasered.Nowland's Tasering has made world headlines, includingAn independent review by the Homicide Squad will be followed by a review by the professional standards command of the NSW Police Force.Continue reading
