The provincial Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture is advising residents of polar bear sightings in and around Pacquet on the Baie Verte Peninsula and Melrose on the Bonavista Peninsula. FileBAIE VERTE, N.L. — The provincial Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture is advising residents of polar bear sightings in and around Pacquet on the Baie Verte Peninsula and Melrose on the Bonavista Peninsula.
The forestry officials advised residents to keep pets inside or under close supervision, travel in groups when outdoors if possible and never approach a fresh kill or carcass. Forestry officials said that if a bear smells a person, remain calm, give the bear space and a route to get away and back away but do not run. If people need to speak, do so calmly and firmly and avoid eye contact.
