Poilievre says Canada’s immigration system is broken, sidesteps target cut questions
OTTAWA — Canada's immigration system is broken, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre charged Tuesday, as he sidestepped questions about whether he would change current targets.
The federal government has set a target of welcoming 500,000 immigrants per year by 2025, although some worry about the pressure that could add to the country's housing crisis, driven by what experts agree is a supply shortage. Poilievre slams the Liberal target as driven by Trudeau's"ideology," but he did not answer repeated questions about whether he would consider reducing the number.
"I'll make sure we have housing and health care so that when people come here they have a roof overhead and care when they need it," he said Tuesday.Poilievre's comments come as the Conservatives try to increase their support in newcomer communities in some of the country's largest cities and suburbs, selling the party as pro-immigration.
