A Philippine National Police (PNP) colonel, Police Colonel Pergentino N. Malabed, has been identified as one of the casualties in the tragic plane crash near Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC. The crash occurred on Wednesday night when an American Airlines passenger aircraft collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter, plunging into the Potomac River. Malabed was in the United States with two other PNP personnel for pre-delivery inspection of 2,675 vests purchased by the PNP.
The team had arrived in India on January 22 for testing before proceeding to the US for further partner testing.The PNP confirmed Malabed's death on Friday, January 31, expressing their deepest condolences to his family and all those affected by the tragedy. Local American authorities reported that over 60 people were feared dead in the crash, with 28 bodies recovered from the Potomac River as of January 30. American Airlines had 60 passengers and four crew members on board the aircraft, while the military helicopter carried three soldiers.The PNP is assisting Malabed's wife, Rio, in traveling to the US to positively identify her husband's body. The police colonel was identified through a passport recovered from his remains. The Philippine police attaché in Washington will also be supporting Malabed's family during this difficult time
