Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. expressed confidence in the strength of the cases filed in connection with the killings of a policewoman and her son, and a police sergeant in Bulacan, stating that the investigations are complete and will likely lead to convictions. Authorities are focused on apprehending remaining suspects, including the alleged gunman in the Casauay case. A reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest of the remaining suspects.
Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. on Wednesday expressed confidence that the cases filed in connection with the killings of a policewoman and her eight-year-old son, as well as a police sergeant in Bulacan, are strong and will lead to convictions in court.
Nartatez said investigators have completed the case buildup in the killing of Police Senior Master Sergeant Diane Marie Mollenido and her son, John Ysmael, describing the case as solved.He added that authorities are now focused on accounting for remaining suspects in the killing of Police Staff Sergeant Renato Casauay Jr., including the alleged gunman, Julian Salamat. “Our investigators in both cases really did their job to solve the cases since Day 1. All the angles were pursued and all the pieces of evidence were obtained and meticulously reviewed to build a strong case,” Nartatez said. “With the pieces of evidence we have to support the cases, we are confident that there’s a certainty of conviction of the court against those involved,” he added. Police said at least four individuals are already in custody in the Mollenido case, including a couple later identified as the godchildren of the slain policewoman. In the Casauay case, four suspects have also been arrested, among them a police corporal who allegedly failed to arrest Salamat when the latter reportedly approached him to confess to the crime. Nartatez welcomed the decision of Interior and Local Government Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla to offer a P1 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Salamat and other suspects linked to Casauay’s killing.“I commend all our personnel, from the commanders down to our personnel on the ground, for their hard work and dedication to solve these two cases,” Nartatez said. “This only proves the commitment of the PNP to enforce the law against violators, ensure justice for the victims, and bring peace of mind to the Filipino people,” he added.
