The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal will be awarded to community members Saturday in Dominion. CONTRIBUTED - ContributedGLACE BAY — An image on a coffee cup with a catchy but memorable message inscribed on it best exemplifies the reason John White will thoroughly celebrate 16 community members with Platinum Jubilee Medals on Saturday.
The medal was designed to mark the 70th anniversary of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne. There’s also longtime Cape Breton Regional Municipality councillor Darren Bruckswaiger, Dr. Carol Boutilier, who serves thousands of patients in the health-care field, and Sgt. Barry Gordon of the Cape Breton Regional Police Service.
“She walked in there and turned that place around,” he said. “Platinum Jubilee is supposed to be for your involvement in the community and there she is giving her time to keep our culture and heritage alive.”Keeping that heritage alive is just what motivates Mombourquette, who recalls sitting at her kitchen table while growing up and listening to stories about Cape Breton’s coal mining communities.“It is part of our Cape Breton heritage and Cape Breton pride but that doesn’t happen now.
“Everybody wants him,” said White. “You won’t see him in the media, you won’t at all. There’s a guy that deserves recognition."
