Cooking Culinary Adventure: inspired by Halifax's Seaport Market | SaltWire #cooking #cookingshortsPOTLOTEK — In Potlotek First Nation, a community of people that reaches across the province and throughout the country united in a suicide awareness and prevention event,"Forest of Hope."
"It makes me so happy because I didn't think it would grow to this size," Marshall-Bernard said."As soon as I heard Nova Scotia was the province for 2023, I said, 'How do we get it to Potlotek?'" These storytellers share their stories to reduce stigma and promote community support, including Laureen Rushton from Belmont, N.S. She lost her son Lucas in 2021 to suicide. Rushton paints rocks in memory of her son, with the hashtag #LukesLegacy on the back. The stones have even reached far-off places like Machu Picchu. Rushton says it's another way to share her son's story with the world.
Her message is clear: mental health struggles often remain hidden behind a mask of normalcy. Rushton said her son struggled with being away from his community during the COVID-19 pandemic and stressed the importance of communicating with loved ones with intention. "It gives a glimmer of hope for people, especially people with severe mental issues or somebody going through a hard time," Marshall said."I'm hoping people won't hide it so much and be ashamed. Tell somebody."
