Replacing furnaces can save energy and provide a quieter, cleaner, warmer home. It\u0027s easy to add air conditioning at the same time.
“You can run a fridge or a dishwasher until it dies, but with furnaces we encourage customers to be proactive,” says Nate Burlando, owner of Distinct Heating and Cooling in Calgary.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. “A tech is going to be standing in your living room quoting $1,500 to replace a part which won’t be available for a week and a half. Or, there are no parts, so you’re looking at replacement and we’re booked out six weeks. Reputable companies are busy. If a guy can come tomorrow to replace your furnace, he has you over a barrel,” Burlando says.Article content
“You got your money’s worth out of the old one. Get a safe, reliable, efficient furnace before this happens.” A new furnace, installed, can start in the $5,500 range but the actual price depends on variables like the age of the home and retrofits to bring it up to code. Venting today is done horizontally with PVC pipe, not vertically up a chimney. The mechanical room needs a floor drain, and if there isn’t one, a condensate pump needs to be installed. The humidifier, the thermostat and a hard-wired carbon monoxide detector are also part of the equation.
The cost is dependent on the furnace. It could be a one or two-stage or modulating model. The more efficient and quieter the furnace is, the more expensive.
