After becoming president of TMU in 2016, Mohamed Lachemi launched a scholarship program to help students facing obstacles in their pursuit of education
As a child growing up in a small village in Algeria, Mohamed Lachemi faced numerous obstacles pursuing an education.
“I’m the oldest in the family and I was the first one to go to school, not to university. I was the first one to go to school,” he recalled. “I succeeded because of all the opportunities that were given to me through awards and scholarships.” He created the President’s Awards to Champion Equity, or PACE, and set a goal of raising $10-million to fund scholarships for students from underrepresented communities. He also contributed $100,000 to the fund.
