KOTA KINABALU: Two schoolboys fighting for their lives in hospital after drinking carbonated drinks mixed with thinner liquid over a week ago in the northern Pitas district have died.
The victims, both aged 17, were warded at the intensive care unit after falling ill following the drinking session with a group of schoolmates from SMK Pinggan-Pinggan on June 8.
Kota Marudu OCPD Supt Zairolnizal Ishak said the first victim died due to multiple organ failure as a result of methanol poisoning at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital I at 4.08pm on Wednesday . He said the other teen who was in critical condition was pronounced dead by doctors due to severe brain injury secondary to acute methanol poisoning at 4pm the following day at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital II .The two boys were among 27 students, aged between 13 and 17, of SMK Pinggan-Pinggan in Pitas who were hospitalised after consuming the drink on June 6.
However, only 27 students were confirmed as methanol poisoning victims following a lab test, he said.“The results for the methanol percentage test by the Chemistry Department confirmed that the proxy samples contained 89% methanol content on June 12,” he added.He urged those who experienced symptoms such as stomach ache, vomiting, headache or blurry vision after consuming drinks with alcohol to immediately seek medical attention at the nearest facility.
