Eastern Health's same-day fly-in and fly-out service is aimed at reducing the waitlist for cardiac catheterizations, freeing up beds in Eastern Health and decreasing expenses for families.

Dr. Sean Connors, chief of cardiac care at Eastern Health, says a new pilot program offering same-day fly-in and fly-out service for patients needing cardiac catheterization procedures will free up beds at Eastern Health facilities. - Peter Jackson. File photoST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The provincial government is piloting a new program offering same-day fly-in and fly-out service for patients needing cardiac catheterization procedures, which are only available in St. John's.

The program, run through Eastern Health, assesses patients based on their health needs and, if able to travel, are flown to St. John's for the procedure and returned to their regional health-care facility on the same day. Provincial health officials said the approach reduces the waitlist for cardiac catheterizations, frees up beds in Eastern Health and decreases expenses for families.Dr. Sean Connors, clinical chief of cardiac care at Eastern Health, said the new program allows cardiac patients in other regions to easily access cardiac catheterization in St. John's.

"This innovative approach supports stable inpatients by transporting them to the cardiac catheterization lab in the morning, where they were assessed, treated as appropriate and, depending on clinical findings, returned to their regional health authority later the same day to recuperate closer to their homes and families,” said Connors.
