No need to hunt for the perfect chocolate gift – we’ve got you covered.
Planning to buy chocolate for your loved ones this week? Too easy. You only have to decide between milk, white, dark, rabbits, novelty, eggs, ethical, sustainable, local, imported, big brand, boutique brand …Pidapipo has not always done chocolate. When Lisa Valmorbida launched her gelateria in Melbourne a decade ago, “chocolate” was just one of the flavours she’d learnt to perfect while attending gelato university in Bologna, Italy.
The upshot? Pidapipo chocolate is your no-compromise, no-nonsense, no-bling and no-regrets chocolate for grown-ups, and its Easter eggs are no exception. The chocolate is single-origin Dominican; the production is small-batch; the hazelnuts come from Piedmont and the packaging is designed by Studio Ongarato. With its focus on fun, and food as entertainment, Koko Black has that most lucrative of market sectors – children – all wrapped up.
was released in the Easter run-up. A coincidence, too, that the cover pic is of a slice of chocolate cake .
So this is what happens when fine arts meets fine chocolate. As a master chocolatier, Xocolatl founder Christos Partsioglou sources Fair Trade-certified Belgian couverture for his family-owned brand’s range of beautiful handmade chocolates. As a fine arts graduate, Partsioglou designs the eggs, draws or paints the packaging, and has some fun with the flavours of Xocolatl’s filled mini Easter eggs.
The feelgood factor doesn’t diminish on trying the stuff, either. It’s made locally, the cocoa is sustainably sourced, it’s remarkably good value and, as you’d hope after all this box-ticking, the chocolate’s pretty good as well. And for Easter? Almost without exception, you’ll find Chocolatier bunnies, eggs and the rest in independent retailers, rather than the majors – and don’t we all love a supermarket workaround right now, too.
