The Pictou West MLA has announced her retirement after serving close to 11 years in the House of Assembly. She expressed her gratitude to her constituents for their support and friendship.
“It is with a heavy heart that after close to 11 years as the member of the House of Assembly for Pictou West , I will announce in the coming weeks I will retire.”Related storiesShe also thanked those who voted for her and those who didn’t.
“To my constituents, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for allowing me the privilege to work on your behalf. I want you to know that I always tried my best to assist each of you with your issues. You had my back for over 11 years and I thank you for the unconditional support and friendship.” MacFarlane became the first female Speaker of the House last fall. She served as the interim leader of the party in 2018 after Jamie Baillie quit because of allegations of inappropriate behaviour toward a young woman who worked for the party. She was first elected in 2013 and served as minister of community services, L’nu affairs and the minister responsible for the advisory council on the status of women.
MacFarlane said she was very proud of the work accomplished by the Houston government and will continue to support the leader and the party. She thanked her family for their unconditional love and support over the years and said she will be spending more time with them.“Karla is everything that anyone could expect in an excellent MLA. She cares deeply. She is dedicated. And she is extremely kind.”“The list of Karla’s accomplishments is long, and she will leave her mark in the history of this province as the first female Speaker of the Nova Scotia legislature.
