STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOSThe tournament is held in memory of three players of the 1983/84 team as well as one of their mothers whose lives were lost in a tragic motor vehicle accident while returning home from a tournament in Chatham, New Brunswick in February 1984. Donald Gladwin 15, John Allan MacDonald 14, Shawn MacKay 15 and his mother Lee Marie MacKay were the fatal victims of the accident.
Ron Turnbull, the head coach of the 1983/84 team has coached in Pictou County Minor Hockey for more than 25 years, and will serve as guest speaker for this year’s hometown celebrations. Since its inception in 1985, this tournament has featured the top Bantam AA/A teams in Atlantic Canada. Former Pictou County players who competed in the tournament include Stanley Cup Champions Colin White and Jon Sim as well as pro players Joey MacDonald and Derek Walser. The Memorial Tournament 2001 MVP was none other than Sidney Crosby
The tournament features 20 teams including PCMHA's U15 AA/A Crushers. The first game starts at 9 a.m. at the PC Wellness Center with Brookfield Elks U15 A facing off against Bedford Blues U15A and Antigonish Bulldogs U15AA facing off against Halifax Hawks U15AA. Games continue throughout the weekend.
The first game with the host teams is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. with the PCMHA Crushers U15A playing against Chebucto U15A. The U15AA Crushers will see Acadia U15AA at 3:30 p.m. The opening ceremonies will take place in the Sobeys Arena at the PC Wellness Centre at 5pm. All minor hockey players from Pictou County are encouraged to wear their respective team jerseys and come out to cheer on the home teams.
