“I’m quite humbled by the honour,” said MacKinnon in an interview after the ceremony at the Pictou County Wellness Centre on April 16. “There’s a lot of people who deserve the honour too. It’s unexpected, and I’m very surprised. You do these things for your own satisfaction and not necessarily for the recognition.”
Along with MacKinnon, 11 other volunteers and volunteer groups were nominated for the 2024 Volunteer of the Year award. Those nominated were Monica Beudin, Joan Clark, Alan Elliott, Cody and Gillian Joudrie, Candace Ferguson, Lisa Hawkes, Erin MacGregor, Alena Martin, Tim van Veen, the Karma Closet Crew and Melanie McDuff.Warden Robert Parker took the time to celebrate all the other volunteers in the community during the reception.
He highlighted the importance of volunteer firefighters in the community and the significance of volunteering in maintaining and improving mental health. All the volunteers recognized received a certificate for their efforts in the community, with the nominees for volunteer of the year receiving an English oak sapling that they can plant.
