First Nations dancers and drummers performed in front of hundreds at Westminster Pier Park for the teaching pow wow.

Hundreds of New Westminster and Burnaby residents gathered today, Sept. 30, for a four-hour powwow, Voices of our Children, as part of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

This included traditional dancing by Wild Moccasin Dancers, drumming by StarChild and guest speakers about the impacts of the former residential school system. As well, several Indigenous vendors and food trucks were set up for the event in Westminster Pier Park . The Spirit of the Children Society organized the powwow, which was supported by the First Nations Health Authority City of Burnaby via a $3,000 grant.

Burnaby has also made a commitment to support the event in future years, a city spokesperson confirmed. Mayor Mike Hurley also delivered a speech at the teaching powwow.
