The National Maritime Council (NMC) condemns the continued presence of Chinese ships in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ), calling it a violation of international law and Philippine sovereignty.
The National Maritime Council (NMC) condemned the continued presence of Chinese ships in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone ( EEZ ). The NMC stated that two vessels of the China Coast Guard (CCG), identified as CCG 5901 and CCG 3304, were operating unlawfully in the waters around Bajo de Masinloc (Scarborough Shoal) on January 5th and 10th, respectively.
The council also criticized the deployment of a People's Liberation Army-Navy (PLA-N) helicopter that hovered over a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel conducting its duties. The NMC asserted that these actions violate the Philippine Maritime Zones Act and international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos) and the 2016 Arbitral Ruling, which affirmed the Philippines' sovereign rights in its maritime zones. The incidents prompted the Philippine government to file another diplomatic protest against China, reiterating its long-standing sovereignty over Bajo de Masinloc, its territorial sea, and waters within its EEZ. The NMC emphasized that China lacks any basis to conduct law enforcement activities or maritime patrols in these waters. The Philippines called on China to comply with international law and refrain from illegal actions that violate its sovereign rights. This is not the first instance of Chinese encroachment in Bajo de Masinloc. Shortly after the new year, the National Security Council (NSC) characterized the CCG's 'Monster Ship' patrol operations as acts of intimidation, coercion, and aggression. Senator Risa Hontiveros urged the government to file further cases against China before an international court and emphasized the need to strengthen alliances with nations whose coast guards can patrol alongside the Philippines.Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada echoed the call for a comprehensive and proactive response from the government, stressing the importance of protecting Philippine rights and ensuring national security. He cited the 2016 Arbitral Award as reaffirming the Philippines' sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea
