The Philippine Army and the US Army Pacific will highlight the Typhon mid-range capability (MRC) missile's payload delivery system during their joint military exercises in February. This training will focus on maximizing the utilization of the Typhon system, especially as tensions in the West Philippine Sea continue to rise.

The Philippines and the US Army will prioritize the utilization of the Typhon mid-range capability (MRC) missile's payload delivery system during their joint military exercises slated for February. Colonel Louie Dema-ala, spokesperson for the Philippine Army, announced this during a briefing on Tuesday.

The training exercise, known as the Philippine Army's combined arms training exercise, will feature the Army Artillery Regiment and the US Army Pacific (USARPAC) focusing on the Typhon missile's payload delivery system.A payload delivery system, as Dema-ala explained, is a mechanism responsible for transporting and releasing a payload, such as a package or other item. These systems are commonly employed by drones, robots, or rockets. This second iteration of the training exercise builds upon the knowledge gained during the initial round of expert exchanges between the two armies.Dema-ala indicated that the training would take place sometime during the third week of February. The Typhon missile system, which arrived in the Philippines in April 2024, was last known to be stationed in Ilocos Norte, a coastal province facing Taiwan. Despite China's opposition to the missile system's presence in the country, the Department of National Defense has firmly rejected calls for its removal. The specific current location of the missiles remains undisclosed. Philippine Army chief Romeo Brawner Jr. has publicly defended the deployment of the Typhon missiles, expressing hope for the country's acquisition of the system in the near future. Dema-ala emphasized that while the MRC is currently in the Philippines, the country will aim to maximize its utilization to train personnel in this novel technology. The deployment of the Typhon missile coincides with heightened tensions in the West Philippine Sea, fueled by overlapping claims between Manila and Beijing. China's actions stem from its assertion of sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea, including a significant portion of the West Philippine Sea, which falls within the Philippines' 200-mile exclusive economic zone.In a separate development, the Philippine Air Force (PAF) anticipates increased high-level interactions with the US Pacific Air Force (PACAF). This follows a visit by PACAF commander General Kevin Schneider to PAF chief Arthur Cordura at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City on Tuesday. According to Air Force spokesperson Colonel Ma. Consuelo Castillo, the two commanders engaged in discussions aimed at strengthening interoperability between the two air forces and enhancing their combined operational capabilities.Castillo further revealed that the commanders emphasized the importance of joint exercises and training programs in bolstering the operational readiness of both forces. Key areas of discussion included information sharing, airman-to-airman dialogues, and routine maritime cooperative activities. The meeting also addressed ongoing projects under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), which seek to foster cooperation in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, strengthen the country's defense capabilities, and promote regional security
