The Philippines and South Korea have launched a new Knowledge Sharing Program (KSP) focused on energy cooperation and a secure energy system. The program will see the exchange of expertise and best practices, with the Philippines benefiting from Korea's advancements in energy technologies and showcasing its own strengths in renewable energy.
The Philippines and South Korea recently launched their 2024-2025 Knowledge Sharing Program (KSP), following formal discussions between their respective governments in August 2024. The KSP is a key bilateral initiative for energy cooperation and a secure energy system.
It serves as a strategic platform for the exchange of expertise and best practices, enabling the Philippines to benefit from Korea's advancements in energy technologies while showcasing its own strengths in renewable energy (RE), particularly in geothermal and pumped hydropower generation. \The Department of Energy (DOE) stated that the program will focus on critical energy priorities, including the integration of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, RE integration and grid modernization, advanced battery storage systems, and nuclear energy development. As part of the program, the DOE said the Philippines has submitted three proposals that align with its energy transition and socioeconomic development goals. These include accelerating electric vehicle adoption and charging infrastructure, integrating floating solar and smart grid technologies, and strengthening capacity building for clean energy development. \'Through the KSP, we aim to gain invaluable insights and best practices that will help us craft policies, strengthen our institutions, and implement innovative energy solutions that respond to the country's evolving energy landscape,' Undersecretary Alessandro Sales said at the launch. Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian acknowledged the program's role in deepening bilateral ties and advancing shared sustainability goals. 'I envision a greener, more sustainable future, and the KSP provides an opportunity for mutual learning. Korea can also benefit from the Philippines' long-standing expertise in geothermal and pumped-storage hydropower, while we can gain valuable insights from Korea's advancements in smart grids, battery technologies, and nuclear energy,' Gatchalian said. Since its inception in 2004, the KSP has conducted 759 research programs across 1,300 topics, with collaborations that drive innovation and enhance institutional capabilities. Asia Economic Development Committee Chairman Yoon Sukhun said: 'This program is not just about technology transfer; it is a testament to the enduring friendship and shared commitment of our nations to sustainable energy development.
