Two teenage prodigies from the Philippines , Khevine Cruz and Liam Cabalu, dominated the doubles competition at the 2024 US Open Table Tennis Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada, defeating top-seeded US players Kyler Chen and Liren Zhang. The pair, representing the National Academy of Sports (NAS), secured their victory after a series of upsets throughout the tournament.
This achievement follows their success in the WTT Youth Contender 2024 in Dubai last October, where they finished first and second respectively. NAS, a government-run and funded institution, aims to identify and nurture future sports stars from a young age, providing comprehensive support including scholarships, training, and allowances. NAS Executive Director Josephine Joy Reyes expressed pride in their athletes' performance, stating, 'Our athletes competed against the best and proved they can level up on the international stage.
