Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin expressed concern on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, regarding the presence of China Coast Guard 's massive vessel within the country's exclusive economic zone. He stated that the Philippines has been challenging the ship's presence and that the Coast Guard has been closely monitoring its movements.
While no confrontational incidents have occurred, Bersamin acknowledged that the situation could be a projection of power and declined to provide further details due to operational sensitivities. Bersamin assured that the National Government is taking China's actions seriously, citing the numerous protests filed by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) against China's harassment of Filipino troops in the West Philippine Sea, as well as ongoing ministerial talks between Manila and Beijing to address regional issues. Separately, Philippine Navy spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea (WPS) Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad also voiced concern over the Chinese ship's presence in the WPS, emphasizing concerns about other intrusions, including those by the Chinese Coast Guard, maritime militia, and research vessels. He stressed that the Philippine Navy remains undeterred in the face of these intrusions. On Saturday, January 4, Chinese Coast Guard vessel 5901, the world's largest coast guard vessel, was detected using Canada's Dark Vessel Detection (DVD) system 54 nautical miles off the coast of Capones Island, Zambales. It was later spotted near Lubang Island in Occidental Mindoro and 65 nautical miles southwest of Los Frailes Island in Zambales
