A mature Philippine Eagle was found dead near an electrical post in Salay, Misamis Oriental, with burn-like marks on its feet. Authorities are investigating electrocution as a possible cause pending necropsy results.

A mature Philippine Eagle was found dead near an electrical post and power line in Salay, Misamis Oriental, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources ( DENR) in Northern Mindanao is investigating the cause.

Eagle Found Near Power Line

The bird was discovered in Sitio Panghaon, Barangay Guinalaban, with burn-like marks on its feet. Authorities are considering electrocution as a possible cause of death. The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Gingoog City received a report around 11 a.m. on October 1 after a farmer discovered the eagle about two hours earlier. DENR personnel, working with barangay officials, immediately went to the area to investigate.

An initial examination found no apparent external wounds on the eagle. The adult eagle had an approximately 76-inch wingspan, an individual wing span of 36 inches, a 40.5-inch tail, and an estimated weight of 5.25 kilograms. Its bill measured around eight centimeters, or 3.18 inches long. The bird was already emitting a foul odor when authorities examined it, suggesting it may have died some time before its discovery.

Based on information gathered during the field investigation, the eagle was last seen flying between 10 and 11 a.m. on September 30. It was found the following morning near the power line. Investigators also documented chickens, chicks and a leashed hound near the electrical post, noting that such animals could potentially attract a Philippine Eagle as prey.

Electrocution Probe and Necropsy

The DENR said that given the burn-like marks and the eagle's proximity to an electrical post and power line, electrocution is being considered as a possible cause of death. The agency stressed, however, that the actual cause remains subject to further examination and confirmation through a necropsy. The eagle's remains were initially taken to the Bukidnon Provincial Zoo in Malaybalay City for secure storage.

On October 2, they were turned over to the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) for necropsy and further study. Results are expected to help determine the cause of death and provide additional information for the investigation. The Philippine Eagle, or Pithecophaga jefferyi, is the national bird of the Philippines and is considered the country's top carnivore. It is found only in Luzon, in the provinces of Leyte and Samar, and in Mindanao, according to the Philippine Eagle Foundation.

The species is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and has an estimated wild population of fewer than 400 breeding pairs. DENR Northern Mindanao urged the public to immediately report sightings of injured, distressed or dead Philippine Eagles and other wildlife to the nearest DENR office or appropriate wildlife authorities.
