The Department of Transportation (DOTr) in the Philippines has made significant strides in 2024, aiming to improve the country's transportation system through a combination of infrastructure projects, Public-Private Partnerships, and a focus on sustainable mobility.
Transportation plays a crucial role in the Philippines , impacting not only the mobility of its citizens but also the national economy and tourism. However, the existing transportation system has faced criticism for its inefficiency and high costs, compounded by urban traffic congestion, road safety concerns, and passenger surges during peak hours and days.
To address these challenges, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has been implementing various projects, both completed and ongoing, aiming to create a more efficient and sustainable transportation network. A significant focus has been on Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to bolster infrastructure development. For example, the DOTr awarded San Miguel Corp. (SMC) the contract to upgrade, expand, operate, and rehabilitate the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in September 2024. SMC established NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC), led by Chairman and CEO Ramon Ang, to oversee this ambitious project. Another notable accomplishment was the operational launch of the first phase of the Light Rail Transit-1 (LRT-1) Cavite Extension in November 2024, providing citizens with a faster and safer mode of transportation to the southern parts of Metro Manila. The DOTr continues to advance the construction of the Metro Rail Transit-7 (MRT-7), with partial operations anticipated in the fourth quarter of 2025. This railway line will span from North Ave. Station to Quirino Station. Beyond improving existing railways, the DOTr is committed to expanding the network with new railway lines, such as the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) and the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP). The NSCR will connect provinces like Pampanga, Bulacan, and Laguna to Metro Manila, reducing reliance on air and long-distance bus travel. Meanwhile, the MMSP, considered the country's 'Crown Jewel' of mass transit, has seen the commencement of tunnel boring operations at the Camp Aguinaldo station by the DOTr and the Armed Forces of the Philippines. To alleviate traffic congestion, the DOTr is exploring the construction of an underground railway system in Cebu Province, engaging in discussions with Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia since last year. In addition, the Taguig City Integrated Terminal Exchange (TCITX) project is slated for completion this year. Operating under a centralized ticketing scheme and featuring a passenger concourse and pedestrian walkway, TCITX exemplifies the DOTr's vision of a modern and comfortable transport system. This project is also a joint venture with private partner Ayala Land Inc. Continuing its push for safe and sustainable mobility, the DOTr is actively expanding its active transport infrastructure program. As of November 2024, over 325.66 kilometers of active transport infrastructure have been established in key urban areas across the country. Guided by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directives, the DOTr is poised to continue its ongoing projects and plans, building upon the successes achieved in 2024. The department remains focused on implementing these crucial infrastructure projects to enhance connectivity, promote economic growth, and improve the lives of Filipino citizens
