The Philadelphia 76ers have reversed course and will not build a $1.3 billion downtown arena, just weeks after approval from the city council. The team has reportedly reached a deal with Comcast Spectacor to remain in the city's sports stadium district.
The Philadelphia 76ers have unexpectedly decided not to build a $1.3 billion downtown arena, just weeks after receiving approval from the city council. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that multiple council members confirmed the change in plans. The team has reportedly reached a deal with Comcast Spectacor to remain in the city’s sports stadium district, but details about the new proposal haven't been released.
The 76ers, the mayor's office, and Comcast Spectacor, which owns the Wells Fargo Center, declined to comment on the matter. The team currently rents the arena from Comcast Spectacor, which also owns the Philadelphia Flyers. The council had approved the downtown arena on December 19th after over two years of debate. The team had hoped to move into the arena, called 76 Place, by 2031. The vote came despite strong opposition from Chinatown residents and activists. Council member Jimmy Harrity, who supported the move, expressed frustration and said he felt used. Mayor Cherelle Parker, a Democrat who championed the plan, had stated that the entire city would benefit from the project. Supporters believed the 18,500-seat arena would revitalize the struggling Market East retail corridor. The team owners, Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, had been pushing for city approval by the end of the year to meet their target opening date. They had pledged not to seek city construction funding but were free to apply for state and federal funds. Instead of property taxes, they would have paid about $6 million annually in lieu of taxes. Opponents worried about traffic congestion on game days, as well as gentrification and rising rents in the area. The Chinatown community has fought numerous proposed developments since the 1960s, including casinos, a prison, a baseball stadium, and a highway
