The 308 GT’s peachy ride and handling provides a premium driving experience. Whether it’s worth the price is another matter altogether.
The Peugeot 308 GT Hatch is an all-new model from France’s oldest surviving car manufacturer . This 308 – launched in Europe in 2021 – represents the model’s long-due return to the Australian showroom; sales of the predecessor petered out just before the pandemic. The newcomer, built on a new platform designed for petrol, PHEV and BEV applications, has a longer wheelbase and is lower.
For its solid, chunky good looks and classy interior – which is roomier than the previous 308. For the high equipment levels and interesting tech, including a holographic-style instrument panel and “3D navigation”. Although the output is modest, particularly for what looks like a stylish hot hatch, it’s a willing engine, with lots of its torque down low. There is excellent economy in the lab , and IRL.
A peachy ride-and-handling combo is a Peugeot hallmark and that’s evident here. The 308 is well tied down at both ends and lots of fun in the twisty stuff. It’s also easy to live with, doing many clever things such as locking up as you walk away after parking. Lastly, there’s a station wagon available. Such a body style still has a lot to offer despite being overshadowed by the SUV.
The small steering wheel, designed to make the high-mounted instruments a bit like a head-up display, is controversial. I like it but with some height and seat preferences, the top rim of the steering wheel will obscure parts of the instrument panel. It is not going to set the market on fire, but the 308 provides a premium driving experience and is a bit different .
