With potential pet protections being voted down in the legislature, some tenants in Prince Edward Island may have to choose between keeping their pets and housing.
Justine Lorch, who is actively looking for housing in P.E.I., says finding a pet-friendly place to live is essential, as getting rid of her cats Fury and Tika is not an option. ContributedCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — With potential pet protections being voted down in the legislature, some current and new tenants in Prince Edward Island may have to make the difficult decision between their furry companions or housing.
“Especially if you are asking about pets, like if they don’t list and you are going in and asking about it,” she said. The landlords who do reply have been easy to work with and were up front with what they are looking for in a tenant, however Lorch said more often than not, there is a push to not allow pets in rentals.
With her current employment contract wrapping up at the end of December, Lorch said she is now under a time limit to find a place to rent. If she was asked to give up her cats, Fury and Tika, in order to find a place, Lorch said she would never consider it.“I do have other options such as staying in New Brunswick and unfortunately not connecting with the community I found on the Island. But for me, are like my children. I don’t see the option to give them up.
“We do hear sometimes that some folks have multiple pets, but their landlord is only willing to take one or two,” said Travis. Travis said they surpassed that number this week, with six more weeks left to the year. Luckily, though, she said the shelter has a high turnover rate for animals, as they are often quickly adopted.
