NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has stood by a decision to dump three male MPs from preselection to make way for more women, saying diversity leads to better policy outcomes.

to dump three male MPs from preselection – including a 16-year political veteran – to make way for more women, saying diversity leads to better policy outcomes.

Speaking on Wednesday, Mr Perrottet said the deal was a positive outcome for the party, which needed to become more representative of the community, even as he admitted that the make-up of the ticket could be difficult for those who were relegated.“I made it very clear to the party I wanted to see more women preselected here in NSW and that’s exactly what the party achieved,” he said.

The deal also paves the way for two new party members to join the parliamentary team, including lawyer Susan Carter and political staffer Rachel Merton, who works for Ms Maclaren-Jones. Sitting MPs Chris Rath and Peter Poulos have also been put in winnable positions. Other MPs to voice their frustration at members for ignoring broader community attitudes include outgoing Transport Minister David Elliott, who blasted branches for putting “testosterone before talent” in repeatedly failing to back women. The premier spoke as he toured Coogee Beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs with Emergency Services Minister Steph Cooke and met surf lifesavers.
