Patahiyah Ismail was also the first woman to be appointed as head of the Penang Municipal Council in 2010. In a Facebook post, chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said Patahiyah’s contribution to the state was incomparable.“I hope her family, friends and acquaintances will stay strong in dealing with the loss of their loved one,” Chow said.

Current mayor Yew Tung Seang also offered his condolences, saying he was grateful to have been given a chance to work with Patahiyah. “She was not only the first mayor, she was also my boss when I was attached to the council’s building department in the 1990s. Her contribution to MBPP and the state will never be forgotten,” he wrote on Facebook.She was also the first woman to be appointed as head of the Penang Municipal Council in 2010.
