Safety, I said, is a priority for everyone. It’s not because Ottawa is already a very safe city that it always feels safe for everyone. Feelings of safety are relative. And we’re all entitled to feeling the way we do about our perceptions of safety.But what are their definitions? The front-runners in the race for mayor, I said in that video, are missing a golden opportunity to have a discussion about what they really mean by safety.
What about people who identify as women or who are female-passing and get sexually assaulted more than once by someone in a position of authority over them and don’t report it because they know how pointless it is, especially if they are not white? Are they to be considered “safe” because nobody cares that they’re repeatedly victimized?Article content
