Just think what would happen if we stopped assuming a home is an investment vehicle and instead treated it as an essential need.
The first thing we need to do is not sell that land. The province, under the same government that somehow allocates us a measly 0.4 per cent of the provincial funds devoted to fighting homelessness despite Ottawa being the second-largest city in Ontario, has also been selling public land like it was an endlessly renewable resource. Maybe we need more people-centred politicians in the provincial legislature.
The report is designed to set Ottawa “on the path to progressively realize the right to adequate housing.” Which, by the way, is the law in Canada. The National Housing Strategy Actthat “the right to adequate housing is a fundamental human right affirmed in international law.” Imagine if we took that seriously.
Marty Carr, the city councillor for Alta Vista, points to a waiting list for social housing that has more than 12,000 names on it, and the more than 7,000 people who access shelters in our town. We can — and should — do so much better.
