Event organizer Dana Larsen was quick to hit back at Barker’s claims. “I expect to be back at Sunset Beach next year, the year after and the year after that.”

Parks board commissioner Tricia Barker says a culmination of factors spells the end of Vancouver’s 4/20 event, predicting this year will be the last in a city park.

“It’s gone now from being a protest to a festival and I think they were foolish to do this because it makes our point stronger, that it’s not a protest,” Barker said. “Everyone is getting used to the new laws, with another year under their belt they just won’t be allowing all the illegal sales that happen . By next year they will be ready and there will be no permitted seller of cannabis at this event.”Barker said the fact it was no longer illegal to smoke marijuana in Canada also weakens the event’s case that it is a protest, protected under the Canadian Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms.

Although the event does not have a parks board permit, Larsen said organizers work closely with various city departments and last year paid out over $60,000 to help cover the city’s cost.
