Panel found some money laundering estimates 'unreliable'
The panel that produced this week’s report on money laundering in B.C. real estate was not confident in the reliability of the data it was using to make estimates for 2016 and 2017, arguably the years of most interest in the market.
But it did eventually settle on a way and, in a chart, produced dollar estimates on money laundering in B.C. for every year from 2003 to 2015, and then for 2018. Despite this, the report said there are internationally and academically accepted methods and formulas that can be applied. In an appendix of the report, there is a note that states, based on the same model, that money laundering in B.C. in 2017 could have been between $5.6 billion and $14.1 billion.
