As of Jan. 28, nearly 162,000 patients were waiting for elective surgery, according to the latest Health Ministry figures.

That compares with more than 115,500 patients on wait lists on Jan. 4, 2020, right before the pandemic. This has resulted in the current backlog swelling by 46,366 operations — an increase of 40.13 per cent in three years. From our newsroom to your inbox at noon, the latest headlines, stories, opinion and photos from the Toronto Sun.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

The spike in the number of patients on wait lists during the pandemic follows two periods of délestage, an official government policy of purposely postponing surgeries when COVID-19 hospitalizations surged. The increases in wait times also occurred despite the fact the government signed contracts with private facilities to perform more day surgeries to try to reduce the backlog.

Brunet, executive director of the Conseil pour la protection des malades, said he is waiting for an important medical imaging exam. “We are certainly not satisfied with where we are in terms of catching up on surgeries,” de la Durantaye said by email.
