I opened my bedroom curtains to light so bright one morning this week that I squinted reflexively, my eyes needing time to adjust after weeks in the bitter gloom that typifies a St. John’s “spring.”Fighting the urge to rush outside and dance barefoot on the lawn , I walked to the kitchen and poured myself a cup of tea, my hands shaking with excitement.
Motorcycles, polished to a shine, idled at the intersection of Water and Prescott before roaring through the green light.Workers in hard hats and safety vests smoothed new cement at the site of the National War Memorial. The bright buildings behind them on Duckworth — no longer shrouded in fog — seemed more vibrant than usual.
From up here, the harbour was a pale blue handkerchief, and for the first time in a long time, you could see all the corners — not a wisp of mist.
