MANILA -- Malacañang on Friday called on lawmakers to avoid a repeat of the delayed passage of the 2019 national budget, which slowed economic growth in the first half.

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier this week approved the proposed P4.1-trillion General Appropriations Act for 2020. Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia urged lawmakers to pass next years budget on time as he announced that second quarter growth was at its lowest in 4 years. “The Office of the President also joins Secretary Pernia in calling on the Legislative Branch for the timely passage of the national budget for Fiscal Year 2020 for the continuing implementation of the Build, Build, Build Program...” Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said in a statement.

“The President and this Administration are facing these challenging times head on, confident that our country will go back on track in keeping the growth momentum in the right trajectory,” he said. Panelo said economic managers assured Duterte that the economic growth slowdown only a “temporary setback.”
