The fire department has received 10 applications following the announcement of the program to begin July 1 2024.
Thornhill Volunteer Fire Department chief Rick Boehm says the paid-on call program which is to begin July 1 is already proving beneficial as the department has received eight adult applications and two junior applications following the program's announcement. 90 per cent of the current 37 members have also committed to stay on when the department switches to the new program.
The department has been proactive in adhering to provincial training standards, following the NFPA 1001 standard since its introduction in 2014. The Terrace Fire Department implemented the paid on-call program in February 2024 and has since seen all its volunteers leave.
